Letters to his wife, Charlotte, describing various persons, events, places, etc., during his trip to Savannah, Charleston, Columbia, Raleigh, Washington, and New York, March-June, 1859. Amongst many other things he describes a visit to Grant's Banner Factory (chewing tobacco), Richmond, Virginia; an Asylum for the Deaf, Dumb and Blind at Raleigh; Mrs. Henry C. King of Charleston, South Carolina; and experiences worshipping at various churches.

Brooks was a Unitarian clergyman born in Medford, Massachusetts. He received an A.B. from Harvard College in 1816; A.M. 1819. He was the pastor of the 3rd Congregational Church in Hingham (1821-1838) and later professor of Natural History at the University of the City of New York. He was central to the work of establishing normal schools in the United States and is credited with having introduced the term "normal schools" to America.
